U3A Shared Learning Project 2012

Members of the Shared Learning Project  do work as volunteers for Plymouth City Museum and our research sessions start in January each year.  It's not too late for any newcomer to be welcomed into the group as we have only just decided on our individual subjects for 2012.  At present we have 12 members interested in 10 areas of research.  Our contacts at the Museum are Nigel Overton and Sarah Norrish.

Some of the group are happy just researching for their own enjoyment and to help the museum extend their archive material.  No-one is obliged to give talks if they feel uncomfortable about public speaking, although Plymouth Museum do appreciate our contribution at their Tuesday lunch-time talks which are always well attended.

Barbie Thompson has been approached to give a presentation on 'Plymouth & Dartmoor's Role during the War of 1812' at St Anne's College, Oxford University in May for the Britannia Naval Research Association's 10th Symposium, which is very exciting. She will be giving an extended talk at Plymouth Museum on 4th December. The invitation follows on from a paper she presented at the 45th Maritime History Conference at Exeter University last September. It is of course the result of a lot of hard work and dedication on her part but more importantly goes to show how seriously the work of the U3A Shared Learning Projects are considered.
